Bonnie MacAllister composes in multi-genre, fusing photography, performance, installation, film, and sound. In photographic stills, she mimics the lighting of times past, slips shutter speeds, and she often animates using stop action techniques culled from 35 mm and Holga images. She is drawn to pageantry, burlesque, and motion portraiture. She will take multiple images of an act and piece it back together in a deconstructed film, a slide series, or gif painting.

The imagery of JOUISSANCE::PLAY captures the ecstatic moments rendered in acts on film and 35 mm to relay these scenes in textures of light flickering in projection, stuffed and mounted on fabric seating, and infused in dye on thin pieces of metal. The subjects include split seconds of Coney Island mermaids, a dance of repetition in a children’s game, sea and avian creatures at motion, and frames of co-exhibitor Rachel Blythe Udell in process of her craft. The film installation reveals a story of girl gangs, the obligate aftermath when the government stalks an activist, and an allegory of human trafficking.

This image is one of the two pieces in the show for which Rachel was the model. She and some of the art in the show also appear in the video, "Girl Gangs," one of three films in the show.

Exhibition: All Female Juried Show at F&N Gallery (Opens Friday, January 6)

I'm pleased to announce that I will show work in the All Female Juried Show curated by Carina Romano (Leeway Foundation ACG ’10) and The F&N Gallery. The show will open on January 6th at the F&N Gallery (2009 Frankford Avenue) and run for one month. This juried show will be a presentation of women artists exhibiting a theme of cultural awareness and/or social enlightenment.

I will show documentary photographic work from my Fulbright in Ethiopia ("Addis Girl") and a metal print from my book, Coney Island Mermaid Parade 2011 ("Grasshoppers.") I hope to see you out to support this important exhibition!

I have submitted photographic and video work for jurying. The works were taken in Ethiopia, Coney Island, and suburban Philadelphia's Adventureland. I have featured stills of a collaborative performance video, metal prints of mermaids, and documentation of women and children of Ethiopia, including an image of the Girls Gotta Run Foundation team I visited in Addis Ababa while on a Fulbright-Hays to eight Ethiopian cities.

About the project:
One of the services of the Community Cultural Exchange is to provide our artists with resources to market themselves and find funding for their art. We have always been proponents of both our teaching artists and of outsider artists. We wish to use our STAKE Grant to create a series of business of art workshops to provide one-on-one time with artists looking to market themselves and win grants. We will create a five week program in which artists establish their artist statement, draft their mission for their arts business, market themselves, and draft grant applications to finance their artistic objectives and arts business. The grant will also allow us to provide scholarships to our workshop attendees.

The Community Cultural Exchange is a 501(c)3 non-profit with the mission to create community through art and culture. We do so by acting as a bridge between local art and culture groups, businesses, artists and the South Street area community. This project will enable us to offer educational outreach to our talented community, some of whom have never had the opportunity to learn computer skills, marketing, networking, grant writing, and the business of art. This will allow artists the potential to earn a living wage and develop their own businesses. http://www.communityculturalexchange.org

About the teaching artist:

Bonnie MacAllister has taught this series in Philadelphia, New York and Washington, DC. She has been awarded several times including grants from Fulbright-Hays to Ethiopia, Prudential Annuities, Lincoln Legacy, Philadelphia Education Fund, Teach for America, and Americorps. She launched and won her first Kickstarter Grant for an independent book release which was funded well before the deadline. She was also recently honored as a teaching artist at the Food Justice Conference at the University of Pennsylvania and at Temple University and Central High School's Immigration Conference. She received a stipend to perform at the Women's Caucus for Art art + activism Conference New York's Raandesk Gallery and performed at New York Foundation for the Arts. She curated Women on Lancaster Avenue (part of the LooK! on Lancaster Avenue Festival sponsored by Drexel University and the People's Emergency Center and as part of Philadelphia Open Studio Tours).

So many talented artists came together and made dolls for the Ragdoll Project, and I'm honored to work with them all as we work to fight human trafficking together. LOOK! will feature art placed in the windows and storefronts of vacant buildings along Lancaster Avenue; group art shows in existing galleries or public spaces; and public performances at various locations along Lancaster Avenue. As Drexel University embarks on an extensive program of urban revitalization in Powelton and Mantua, LOOK! provides a unique opportunity for West Philadelphia residents to come together in a celebration of creativity and innovation. The project's goals are to encourage public participation and social interaction; serve as a catalyst for business and culture along the Lancaster Avenue Corridor; and help engender a sense of civic pride and community spirit among the residents of the Corridor neighborhoods. 100 THOUSAND POETS FOR CHANGE: An Anthology

(Ed. Anny Ballardini & Obododimma Oha, in collaboration with MICHAEL ROTHENBERG)

Set in the context of this split between "the end of time" and "the time of the end" is Michael Rothenberg's recent invitation for the global writing public to participate in "a demonstration/celebration of poetry to promote serious social and political change" titled 100 THOUSAND POETS FOR CHANGE on 24 September, 2011. As protests for political reforms sweep across North Africa, the Middle East, in some parts of Europe, in the United States, with the recent disasters in The Gulf of Mexico and in Japan, one cannot help thinking about the Project as a highly significant creative response to change as something more than an adjustment to the way social relations are constructed.

Obododimma Oha and Anny Ballardini, in collaboration with Michael Rothenberg’s event, edits and features outstanding poetic compositions for the 100 THOUSAND POETS FOR CHANGE on Fieralingue's Poets’ Corner. Visual artwork, poems, poetic fiction, poetic nonfiction, and photographs go beyond the simple and gratuitous statement that ‘a change is needed.’ Our present, our Messianic time requires a STILLSTELLUNG (Benjamin’s word) translated by Dennis Redmond in On the Concept of History (1940) with “an objective interruption of a mechanical process” into which we have been engulfed. Dennis Redmond continues in his explanation of STILLSTELLUNG: “rather like the dramatic pause at the end of an action-adventure movie, when the audience is waiting to find out if the time-bomb/missile/terrorist device was defused or not.” We feel that we are living in a similar situation, and we are in need of a Stillstellung followed by ideas to offer our politicians, to make students/friends/our communities more aware of how we can change, revise history, start over again.

Exhibition: Community Cultural Exchange

Thank you to the Community Cultural Exchange for including me in Turn of the Century South Street Artists, 1990-2010.

The exhibition runs from September 22, 2011 - December 12, 2011, and it features my photographs, "T-Rex" (taken at Dinsaurland, VA) and "Michellin Man/Homme Michellin" (taken in Paris.) We were lucky enough to be featured in the video below, and I cannot thank all my CCE buddies enough for the birthday serenade complete with cake which was just what I needed that evening. I'm thrilled to collaborate with the CCE.

The show features art by People Whom Lived, Worked and Played on South Street at the Turn of the Century.

The Community Cultural Exchange of Philadelphia presents a multimedia exhibition in painting, sculpture, jewelry, and photography in an effort to capture, document, and share the creative wealth of South Street with the South Street community and its visitors.

The CCE (COMMUNITY CULTURAL EXCHANGE) presents its “Turn of the Century South Street Art, 1990-2010” Exhibition. Fringe Festival: Scenes from "Tapped" in The Dressing Room (Green Light Arts)

These are images from the closing night of my play "Tapped" as part of "The Dressing Room", a Green Light Arts production directed by Malika Oyetimein. The show ran from September 3-17 at the Plastic Club in Philadelphia.

My piece starred Jenny Birnkrandt, Mle Chester, and Becki Zaritsky. "Tapped" examined how young women can trace their own steps, choreograph their own paces, and recreate themselves despite extreme hardship, violence against women, and oppression.

Part of the Philadelphia Live Arts and Fringe Festival, The Dressing Room was a multidisciplinary performance and visual art piece that explored the rituals and customs performed in a dressing room. The Dressing Room, created and presented entirely by women artists, explored the conflicts women find in their everyday lives - perseverance against abandonment, nurturing against adversity, and personal pride versus objectification. Directed by Malika Oyetimein, "The Dressing Room" also featured plays by Debra Leigh Scott, Gabrielle Corsaro, and Cat Hasson West. "The Dressing Room" was performed upstairs at The Plastic Club. The Plastic Club was founded in 1897 as the first women’s art club in Philadelphia.

WCA/DC Exhibition First Show of Season at FSU

The first show of the fall 2011 semester in Frostburg State University’s Stephanie Ann Roper Gallery will be a showing by the Women’s Caucus for Art of Greater Washington. The show will open with an opening reception on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. and run through Wednesday, Oct. 12.

The show features three of my oils: "Apres Automne," "Presque Printemps," and "Ete d'Or." They were painted as vignettes of hikes on Shenandoah, Appalachia, Adirondack, and Catskill Mountains.

WCA is the major national organization for women in the visual arts professions. Its mission is to create community through art, education and social activism. WCA/DC, a chapter of WCA, is a multicultural community of women in the arts in the Washington, D.C., area, including Maryland, Virginia, D.C. and nearby states.

Some of my Favorite Lyon Storefronts

Last summer I participated in a French language intensive fellowship for teachers of French through the French Traveler. I had never been to Lyon, the third largest city of France, famous for its Greco-Roman architecture (including ampitheatres) and traboules (hidden passages) as just as famous for its lights (can claim to fame Auguste and Louis Lumière, two of my film heros.)

These images reveal three of the unique features of Lyon. The city participates in light festivals, and we had the change to see aerial dance, Porgy and Bess with projections, and light installations for the 14 juillet. The second image features Guignols, puppets that still perform in Théâtre Guignol du Vieux Lyon et du parc. The last image is an authentic bouchon ('cork' in French). Vegans beware: a bouchon is a type of restaurant lyonnais that serves traditional Lyonnaise cuisine, "cochonaille" such as sausages and roast pork and also duck pâté. Compared to other forms of French cooking such as nouvelle cuisine, the dishes are quite fatty and heavily oriented around meat and really nearly every part of the animal is on the menu. The owners of this one were extremely kind and we were invited to apéritifs at their friends' bar where we had some of the most fun with the locals.

Philly Artists Against Censorship: A Literary Event

Poet Saw Wei was imprisoned for two and a half years for hiding an anti-government message in a poem. Mao Thawka, also a poet, died while serving 20 years for writing a poem critical of the military. Burmese comedian Zarganar is serving a 35-year sentence for publicly criticizing the government’s failure to assist victims of Cyclone Nargis.

These men and those currently in prison are the unsung heroes of Burma. They have been censored and wrongfully imprisoned by their government for speaking the truth.

In 2005, I visited Yangon, the former capital of Burma. I quickly fell in love with the lush landscapes and gilded pagodas dotting the horizon, but it was the interaction I had with the Burmese people that most inspired me. They are the most resilient and welcoming people I’ve met in any country I’ve visited. As a poet and writer, I value my creative freedom. The people of Burma deserve theirs too.

So join me (Michelle Tooker), Tamara Oakman and members of the Philadelphia Chapter of the U.S. Campaign for Burma in raising awareness on this issue and $3,938—$2 for each political prisoner.

Green Light Arts Presents The Dressing Room

for the 2011 Philadelphia Fringe Festival

The Dressing Room is a multidisciplinary performance and visual art piece that explores the rituals and customs performed in a dressing room. The Dressing Room, created and presented entirely by women artists, explores the conflicts women find in their everyday lives - perseverance against abandonment, nurturing against adversity, and personal pride versus objectification. Inspired by the 1972 feminist installation WOMANHOUSE, The Dressing Room seeks to show how women survive these small endless battles.

Directed by Malika Oytimein and featuring new plays by Debra Leigh Scott, Gabrielle Corsaro, Cat Hasson West and Bonnie MacAllister, The Dressing Room runs from September 3rd -17th at The Plastic Club on 247 S. Camac Street in Philadelphia. The Plastic Club was founded in 1897 as the first women’s art club in Philadelphia. Green Light Arts is thrilled to present The Dressing Room at this historic landmark. Tickets are $15 and performances are at 7pm on September 3, 4, 7, 10, 11, 14 and 17th. Running time is 60 minutes.

The Dressing Room interweaves visual and performance art, featuring simpatico exhibits by local artists including Bonnie MacAllister, Alexandria Dilks Pandola and a partnership with the Philadelphia Chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art, whose members are creating an exhibit that will be showcased during the run.

Green Light Arts explores the relationship between art and social change and we are creating The Dressing Room to continue the conversation that WOMANHOUSE started almost thirty years ago. WOMANHOUSE was the first public exhibition of feminist art. Judy Chicago (best-known as the creator of The Dinner Party) and Miriam Shapiro rented an old Hollywood mansion and altered its interior through decor and set-pieces to "search out and reveal the female experience...the dreams and fantasies of women." WOMANHOUSE explored the function of women in society by creating a nurturing environment for artists to test the boundaries of what it means to be a woman in the modern world.

In 2010, over twenty of our member artists created The Waiting Room, a multidisciplinary performance that explored the experience of women waiting. The show performed to sell-out audiences at The Old Pine Community Center in Philadelphia and prompted us to host a screening of the documentary film WOMANHOUSE by Johanna Demetrakas, which documented the original work of art. This film along with our production of The Waiting Room started a conversation among our members about what we could do next to keep this important work alive. The Dressing Room promises to do just that.

This still is from my Deconstructed Breath Verse and Performance Poetry class which took place in the upstairs of Rollers Restaurant on Sunday, July 10. I was extremely impressed by the energy and talent of the participants. In just 90 minutes, the participants crafted eight beginnings or free writes based on deconstructed prompts, physically storyboarded, and animated their newly created poems through performances. Poet and performer Bonnie MacAllister will present a multimedia approach to performance poetry. Each
participant will create a full body narrative and learn the techniques of storyboarding, kinesthetic, and deconstructed breath verse.

Bonnie MacAllister studied under Jacques Derrida, Helene Cixous, and Agnes Varda while at the Sorbonne and Paris VIII from 1997-1998. Her poetry is published and in permanent collections in Australia, UK, France, Uruguay, and Italy. She is a Fulbright-Hays recipient to Ethiopia and a Pushcart Prize nominee. MacAllister has staged her multimedia work at the Adrienne Theater, Shubin Theatre, and the Philadelphia Live Arts and Fringe Festival, the latest with Green Light Arts at the Plastic Club this September. She has performed at New York Foundation for the Arts, at Raandesk Gallery in New York, and she will stage original work in Los Angeles in 2012.

Founded in 2008, Classwar Karaoke is a label dedicated to the release of experimental music and short-films; principally, by means of a series of ongoing quarterly surveys, made available via sites such as internet archive, myspace, disclogs, youtube, lastfm, facebook, sonic squirrel, reverbnation, soundcloud etc., under Creative Commons license 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/. All material remains the property of the respective artists and is offered for free download in line with this license. The nine surveys published so far feature almost one-hundred artists, from all over the world; and the material in toto represents significant documentation of the experimental scene itself. Involvement in the project has helped spawn many fruitful collaborations, live-shows and a vibrant exchange of ideas; so much so that, for several repeat-participants, Classwar Karaoke is as much a collective as it is a mechanism for the release of new material.

“Eye Lit” is a deconstructed nursery song for a lover. A capella and vulnerable, the singer describes sounds in tones, a fractured anatomy of a lyric. She thrives on breaking diction and syntax patterns into atomic bits. MacAllister emphasizes the seedy underbelly, the oft neglected components. She unfasten them and relegates them into something else. In the eyes, she confronts her lover, woos her lover, confronts her sister, and rejects her sister. Each slide of a slightly different image reveals the tension in the singers’ face, a singer without a mouth—lit only in the eyes.

“Lionfish on Continents” describes MacAllister’s anticipation before debarking to Ethiopia for her Fulbright-Hays in 2009. She was one of fourteen teachers in the United States to be chosen to write the national curriculum on Ethiopia for the United States Department of State. Several years before, MacAllister lost her cousin, Michael in a tragic and suspicious death. Michael’s father was Ethiopian and he never made it to the United States. MacAllister’s mother nearly adopted Michael early on, and MacAllister always mourned the loss as the loss of a brother. Right before MacAllister left for Ethiopia, Michael Jackson died, and she paints him as a strange fish and a symbol for her cousin, a name to be repeated frequently during her Fulbright, always in her mind while she was in Ethiopia. The imagery for this film was shot on location at the Dragon Elysee in Paris, exactly one year after MacAllister returned from Ethiopia. She was in France about to begin another fellowship for French language educators.

“Platform Attacks” chronicles a series of violent crimes on public transportation in Philadelphia, PA where MacAllister resides. A frequent solitary SEPTA passenger, she discusses the attacks of 2008. Mugged at knifepoint in her own neighborhood with her husband and collaborator, Victor Thompson, she personalizes these incidents. “Platform Attacks” filmmaker and editor, Jim Tuite has other work in Class War Karaoke Survey 0014.

Organized as a participatory experience by The Philadelphia Women’s Caucus for Art, Battle of the Sexes presents works by women artists, each of whom has invited a male artist to exhibit with her. Artists’ names will not appear on labels identifying the works. Visitors will receive ballots, on which they may vote on whether each work was created by a female or male artist. The results will be tallied and posted on this website on May 7th, along with the names and genders of the artists. Results will also be published on the Philadelphia-WCA blog, and emailed to voters who request the results on their ballots. In accord with The Women’s Caucus for Art’s mission to create community through art, education, and social activism, Battle of the Sexes will have you looking, thinking, talking, voting, and coming back to see the mysteries revealed.

Jaimianne, Autumn and Bonnie are members of The Young Women’s Caucus, an internal caucus of the National Women’s Caucus for Art.

Jaimianne Amicucci is one of the head officers of the YoungWC and a board member of the National Woman’s Cacus. She is also a graduate of Finlandia University and will soon enter the graduate program in curatorial studies at MICA in Baltimore. She currently works with porcelain and image transfer to create conceptual art that serves as visual aid for the tensions of global society.

Autumn Horne is an actor, aerialist, dancer, visual artist, martial artist, fight choreographer, narrative dance/movement choreographer, puppeteer, playwright and one-time zookeeper. She is originally from South Florida, now living mostly in New York City. Her newest project is Fight or Flight Response, creating ground/aerial performances rooted in the earliest forms of story communication; gesture, dance, music, theatre. She performs with other artists, masked or unmasked, on the earth, on each other, and in the trees and sky, using aerial apparatus such as silks, static trapeze or lyra. She is dedicated to being a lifelong student as well as a teacher and performer.

Bonnie MacAllister is the Performance Chair of the Young Women’s Caucus, a board member of the International Committee, Past President of the Philadelphia Chapter and belongs to the Philadelphia, New York and DC chapters. She is a graduate of Albright College (BA, English-French-Women’s Studies) and Temple University (MEd). She studied at the Sorbonne in Paris (Cinema and Semiotics) and the University of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (Fulbright-Hays, History, Culture, and Migration). As a playwright and multimedia performance artist, she combines super 8, video, painting, photography, slide installations, with deconstructed breath verse. Her first large scale piece in Philadelphia was the“A-pop-ca-lipstick Burlesque Carnival” (2004). Her latest work is “She Should Have Written It: A Tale of Bohemian Surveillance” (Shubin Theatre).

4. Being able to be a very small part of Sini Anderson's documentary, The Kathleen Hanna Project a.ka. Who Told You Christmas Wasn't Cool, witnessing so many gorgeous tributes from Caroline Polachek, MEN, Kaia Wilson, She Murders, as well as being one of the first to see the Julie Ruin at the Kathleen Hanna Tribute Show. 5. Wild Flag supergroup (featuring Carrie Brownstein, Rebecca Cole, Mary Timony, Janet Weiss) comes to Johnny Brenda's. Seeing Mary Timony for the fourth time in a whole new way. (I was lucky enough to interview her on this tour in 2003).

It is a very exciting project and our zine was well received by the PCA. Take the SEPTA R5 or R2 lines to Glenside Station. Use SEPTA #22 bus or taxicab or walk south along Easton Road to Arcadia University.

From Cheltenham Avenue, bear right onto Limekiln Pike (Route 309 North). As you approach light at Greenwood Avenue, move into right lane. Proceed through light and take first exit (Route 152/Glenside). At top of ramp, make right onto Easton Road. Make first left turn into Castle entrance.

Autumn Horne is an actor, aerialist, dancer, visual artist, martial artist, fight choreographer, narrative dance/movement choreographer, puppeteer, playwright and one-time zookeeper. She is originally from South Florida, now living mostly in New York City. Her newest project is Fight or Flight Response, creating ground/aerial performances rooted in the earliest forms of story communication; gesture, dance, music, theatre. She performs with other artists, masked or unmasked, on the earth, on each other, and in the trees and sky, using aerial apparatus such as silks, static trapeze or lyra. She is dedicated to being a lifelong student as well as a teacher and performer. http://www.autumnhorne.com

Bonnie MacAllister is the Performance Chair of the Young Women's Caucus, a board member of the International Committee, Past President of the Philadelphia Chapter and belongs to the Philadelphia, New York and DC chapters. She is a graduate of Albright College (BA, English-French-Women's Studies) and Temple University (MEd). She studied at the Sorbonne in Paris (Cinema and Semiotics) and the University of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (Fulbright-Hays, History, Culture, and Migration). As a playwright and multimedia performance artist, she combines super 8, video, painting, photography, slide installations, with deconstructed breath verse. Her first large scale piece in Philadelphia was the "A-pop-ca-lipstick Burlesque Carnival" (2004). Her latest work is "She Should Have Written It: A Tale of Bohemian Surveillance" (Shubin Theatre). bonniemacallister.com

A Feminist Tea Party, a project that at its inception was meant to last only an afternoon, has continued now for over a year. After several shows in a variety of venues, we are very excited about our first solo exhibition, at the NYFA Gallery.

We will be serving tea, sweets, and joining guests in conversation every day from April 11th to April 15th in our installation, a recreation of a mid-century parlor.

Each day a different co-host or team of co-hosts will present a conversation or event, engaging guests in conversation surrounding a topic related to feminism that they have chosen for this time and space. Please see our schedule page for more details.

As always, everyone is welcome regardless of your gender, your political persuasion or whether you identify as feminist. Please join us, and make our collaboration your own.
